An update was installed on my desktop pc and now it won't even let me get to the log on screen. PLEASE HELP!!!

My mum out automatic updates on the pc and something has updated this morning when my mum was switching the pc off.  I switched the pc back on and it was a black screen and it looked like it was running through a few things.  Then it stops at the following
message

There is nothing to click on or go back.  The screen just stays on this. 
Can anyone help me; a) help me fix it so I can use the computer, and b) Tell me what it is thats caused it in the first place.
I would be really gratefull for any help anyone can give me.

Run CHKDSK

• Go to the Start button.
• In the Search box, type "cmd" (without quotes) and press Enter.
• At the command prompt, type "chkdsk /r /f" (without quotes) and press Enter.
• Reboot your computer.

"Access denied as you do not have significant privileges. You have to invoke this utility in elevated mode."

If you receive the above error message, it means you are not logged into you computer as an Administrator. If that's the case, follow these steps to run the command prompt in elevated mode:

• Go to "All Programs > Accessories" and right click on "Command Prompt".
• Select "Run as Administrator".
• In the Search box, type "cmd" (without quotes) and press Enter.
