Auto update will not install completely; will not load OS

My computer was hijacked by Auto updates 3 days ago, it says on the screen; Configuring updates stage 3 of 3 0% complete.  Do not turn off.
Nothing changes with this screen, then it eventually says shutting down, only to restart and then goes to same window doing the shut down and restart indefinitly.  I have tried to go to safe mode, to go to last known config., but I can never grt past this message
