After Windows 7 automatic updates, programs will not run

After recent Windows 7 automatic updates, programs (i.e.
Word) will not execute.
The first two minutes after startup, programs will execute.
After that time, all I see is the hourglass and the tasks are not active.
 I have tried disabling my Webroot security,
running malware programs.
I can do a restore from two months ago, and the problem stops.
The the automatic updates are applied to Windows 7 and the problem is back.
