i recently created a new partition drive (Z:) on my computers hard drive to use for backup.
 drive (Z:) has 200 GB of space.
  i created this partition with 'windows disk management'  to use 'windows backup and restore'.
  my OS is windows 7 ultimate.
 
 drive (C:) now has 725 GB of which 188 GB is 'used'.
 when i use windows backup to backup (C:) to (Z:), it looks to be working for an hour or so then returns the message 'not enough free space' on drive (Z:).
 the backup used about 20 GB od space.
  i did
this several times, even deleted the partition and then re-partitioned.
 all partitions on my pc are 'healthy'.

This may occur if the size of the system image backup is more the drive space.
The Recovery partition provided by the manufacturer won’t backup the recent system images.
It can only be used to perform a Factory reset or other recovery options provided by the manufacturer.
 
If you want to backup the recent system images, then you need to use an external drive to backup the system images.
You may also check which system files you need to backup.
Also try to delete unwanted files using
disk clean up utility
Delete files using Disk Cleanup
